Challenges and Opportunities
Cambodia is one of the least urbanized countries in Southeast Asia, with over 80% of the population living in rural areas and more than a third living in extreme poverty. Poorly functioning markets and lack of infrastructure contribute to the continued economic failures of smallholder farmer and agricultural entrepreneurs. Cambodia is highly vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters, ranking in 2016 as the 9th most climate-vulnerable country globally due to high exposure to natural hazards and the lack of collective readiness to manage such hazards (UNESCO). Due to this climate variability, food insecurity and malnutrition are rampant. 25% of Cambodians lack basic nutrients as a direct result of droughts and floods, while 40% of children under the age of 5 are stunted due to malnutrition.

Important Facts and Figures
(2017-2018)
- 2,318 children were taught health and nutrition programs in elementary schools.
- 5,000 farmers in 200 villages were taught about climate-resistant methods to planting rice, vegetables, and cassava plants.
- 1,649 members of village development fund were taught skills about fund management, chicken production, and technical assistance to improve the economic condition of their targeted communities.
- 374 children regularly served breakfast prepared with vegetables from school gardens.
- Students harvested 2,500 kilograms of organic vegetables and planted 800 tree seedlings.
- 2,000 households began producing salinity-resistant and drought-resilient crops.
